Groenlo is proud of its rich history and takes care to maintain its histroical sites. Examples are the cannons on the town wall and the footpaths to historical places of interest which are being created in Groenlo. A large historical monument is the Engelse Schans near Lievelde, where soldiers camped during the siege of Groenlo. The defences have been completely restored.

A unique feature in Lichtenvoorde and its surroundings are the ‘Kerkepaden’ (‘church paths’). These unsealed pathways were used in earlier times by farming families when walking to church. These have been fully restored and are beautiful nature walks. In 2005 the Kerkepaden were awarded the prestigious Achterhoek Promotion Prize. More information about the Kerkepaden and other walking, cycling, driving and skating routes is available from
the tourist information office in Lichtenvoorde.
